Technically, any kind of dance and yoga—both forms of mind/body movement—can be done consciously by engaging the mind and body with attention and intention, emotion and expression, authenticity and embodiment. However, the norm in American yoga and dance spaces is to make both of these ancient practices into a workout that focuses on superficial aspects that are often more concerned with how we look and less with how we feel or how we function. At SGC, yoga and dance are meant to make us feel good and help us to engage in the activities in our lives that bring us joy.
At SGC, both yoga and conscious dance allow us to connect the mind/body/spirit, to be more embodied, more grounded, and more present. There are many different kinds of yoga, but at its core yoga is about connecting the breath with movement and meditation. There are also many different kinds of conscious dance, but at its core this practice is done barefoot and involves moving meditation, body awareness, imagination, and a combination of structured movement and freestyle elements. In both yoga and conscious dance, participants are encouraged to find what feels good in the moment, to choose the options and variations that work best for them, and to move mindfully.
At the Spiral Goddess Collective we teach JourneyDance™, which is considered to be a healing modality—it is guided movement, set to an eclectic and diverse set of music, that allows us to explore ourselves and connect with each other in a space held by the JourneyDance™ guide. It's like the meaning of the double spiral—limitless expansion out into the world through our ability to connect with people and nature and to see the bigger picture as we find our flow connected with the inward to journey to better understand our core essence, our purpose, and our capacity for self-love and empathy.
